Day 2 - Cold, wet and beautiful!

Is there any other way to see Scotland but under heavy fog and intermittent yet surprisingly bone-chilling rain? I say bloody well not!! So, out we went, into the windy weather, headed for Holyrood - the Queen's official residence when she visits Scotland. They are enjoying a visit from Lord Chancellor Twinkle Toes this week so the unwashed masses are not welcome! Undeterred, we caught a cab (with party seating) and were whisked off to Edinburgh Castle for a walk around and a peek at the Scottish Crown Jewels. James the VI in 1606 was the last monarch to wear them as his ambition got the better of him and he merged Scotland and England under one monarch and named himself King James the first of England. Time will tell if they might soon be in use again as Scotland is considering a referendum to secede from he UK.

Then we stopped in the castle for tea and were relieved to see that they'd upgraded the plumbing from the 17th century. They had heat an' all!

After being warmed up and fortified with cake and tea, we set off again just in time to catch the changing of the guard and see a bridal party in full Scottish regalia. There's something about a young man in a kilt that gets the heart racing!

We wandered from the castle through the touristy shops and abbeys and delightful little side streets. We then rushed off to meet Carol and David for dinner at P'tite Follie for dinner. A couple of bottles of wine later, we had enjoyed a lovely meal and lively conversation! Will Alison ever learn not to take the bait? Will any of us??

Early to bed for a fitful night's sleep and off to Yorkshire in the morning.
